RussianH and MacOS 8

Users of MacOS 8 need to follow a different installation procedure than that described in the printed documentation for users of Macintosh System 7.6.1 and before.

Install RussianH with MacOS 8

  1. Note the language used by the operating system for Finder menus and dialogs.

If the language is Russian, then Russian system software is installed. Use either RS-RussianH(TM) or RS-RussianHa(TM) for the installation.

If Finder uses another language for its menus and dialogs, then use US-RussianH(TM) or US-RussianHa(TM) for installation.

  2. Choose an installation disk from among the following four disks:

RS-RussianH(TM) (for users of Russian system software)
    RS-RussianHa(TM)

US-RussianH(TM) (for users of non-Russian system software)
    US-RussianHa(TM)

The instructions that follow apply to the disk "US_RussianH(TM)"; installation is similar with the other three disks.

  3. Quit all open applications.
  4. Open your startup drive's root directory.
  5. If your System Folder is open, close it.
  6. Insert the disk "US_RussianH(TM)" in your floppy drive.
  7. Open the folder "Russian Folder".
  8. Select the following files

    RussianH Fonts
    Russian
    RussianTransliterated

  9. Copy the selected files to your closed System Folder.

Drag the files to your System Folder and let go of the mouse after the System Folder hilites but before the System Folder springs open.

  10. Open the Fonts folder within the Russian Folder on "US_RussianH(TM)".
  11. Select all eight files within the Fonts folder.
  12. Copy the selected files to the Fonts folder within your System Folder.
  13. Choose Control Panels from your Apple Menu.
  14. Open the Keyboards control panel.
  15. Scroll the keyboard list to Russian or RussianTransliterated.
  16. Check Russian or RussianTransliterated (you may check both).
  17. Close the keyboard control panel.
  18. Close all windows.

Installation is complete. Read Using RussianH with MacOS 8 for help with using RussianH.

More Installation Information

The RussianH software includes four disks:

"US-RussianH(TM)" installs RussianH font family for users of non-Russian system software.
"US-RussianHa(TM)" installs RussianHa font family for users of non-Russian system software.
"RS-RussianH(TM)" installs RussianH font family for users of Russian system software.
"RS-RussianHa(TM)" installs RussianHa font family for users of Russian system software.

"US-_" or "RS-_?"

Users who are working with Russian System Software need to install with the disk "RS-RussianH(TM)" or "RS-RussianHa(TM)". The procedure is the same as given for "US-RussianH(TM)" above, except that the Installer application is named in Russian.

All other users should install with "US-RussianH(TM)" or "US-RussianHa(TM)"

RussianH, RussianHa, or both?

The font family RussianHa conforms to the Apple Cyrillic Character Encoding published by Apple Computer, Inc. The font family RussianH conforms to the Extended Apple Cyrillic Character Encoding, developed by several Russian type vendors.

Extended Apple Cyrillic substitutes a few additional Cyrillic characters for infrequently used special symbols while mostly conforming to the Apple standard.

Most users will want to work with RussianH. If your work must conform 100% to the Apple Cyrillic Encoding, then use RussianHa.

You may install both RussianH and RussianHa to the same startup-disk if desired. The two fonts have separate ID's and will not conflict with each other.

What is "character encoding?"

Character encoding associates characters (letters of the alphabet, punctuation, numerals and special characters) with numbers. Computers use numbers to represent text in memory and on disk. Most desktop computers use the ASCII standard for Roman based text. Non-Roman languages such as Arabic, Cyrillic or Hebrew must use other standards.

What encoding standards are used for Cyrillic languages?

Macintosh:

Apple Cyrillic Encoding
Extended Apple Cyrillic Encoding
KOI8

PC:

MS-DOS Cyrillic Encoding
Microsoft Cyrillic Encoding
KOI8

What character encodings are supported by RussianH?

RussianH for Macintosh supports Apple Cyrillic Encoding and Extended Apple Cyrillic Encoding character encodings.
